Sport Psychology

About Sport Psychology

Sport Psychology sessions for both elites and amateurs. We work with both juniors and adults between the ages of 10 and 80 (though would love to support those who are older if they are up for it!).

We tend to support those who:

  • Compete or perform regularly and want to maximise their success and learn some long term mental skills and performance techniques. We will work on strategies and tactical goal planning, setting of targets and focus for the season and the identification of mental skills to improve specific barriers in current performance.
  • Are currently injured or dealing with a setback to set goals for recovery and information and advice on making the most of time off sport to learn new mental skills. The process will also include identification of potential trigger points and stressors for further injury or issues and help to ensure these can be managed effectively.
  • Are dealing with performance issues which are really restricting their ability to succeed. These are often related to anxiety, lack of emotional control, perfectionism or social comparison.

How does it work?

For amateurs we tend to need around 5 or 6 sessions and these are usually spaced out fortnightly so there is time for practice and homework. For elites the support is ongoing as and when needed based on issues or competitive events. We work from a really nice approach called ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Training) which helps us understand and acknowledge the barriers we face but identify and use our values and purpose in life to overcome them. It is a gentle approach which is well suited to the sporting environment.

what They’re Saying

Client Testimonials

“There’s only so many runs you can do, before you have to admit that it’s your head that’s holding you back. My work with Josie was practical, fun and actionable. In the season she helped me change my mental approach to racing, I broke my PB at every distance I raced. Working with Josie was a complete game changer.”

Triathlete

“Josie was incredibly helpful and supportive in helping me to prepare for my first 24hr race. From working on managing fears through to getting the most out of my mental as well as physical performance on the day; the things we worked on for the race not just helped me on the day, they’ve been useful since in sport and more widely in life! She’s very easy to work with, insightful and really knows how to tailor her approach for you as an individual. Thank you.”

Ultrarunner

“Working with Josie has been a very positive and enjoyable experience.  The sessions enabled me to find strategies to deal with anxiety and a crisis of confidence on the bike.  Josie also supported and guided me through the process to explore and identify what sort of cyclist I wanted to be allowing me to start enjoying my cycling again and to set purposeful goals.”
